Investment Committee
The cornerstone of the St James’s Place plc approach to investment management is the Investment Committee. The Committee’s role, very simply, is to ‘manage the fund managers’ on behalf of our clients.
It has the overriding objective of generating consistently superior investment results. This is achieved by selecting the best individuals within the appropriate investment firm, monitoring the individual and the firm to ensure the Committee remains happy with the choice, changing them when and where necessary.
To enable the Committee to fulfill its objectives, it holds quarterly reporting sessions with each manager, giving members the opportunity to question them closely. At each meeting the Committee makes crucial decisions about the best way forward.
- Leave the portfolio of managers unchanged because the Committee retains confidence in the way clients' funds are being managed.
- Introduce a new investment fund or strategy, from an additional firm if necessary, to give investors greater flexibility to improve performance prospects.
- Retain the investment firm however change the manager (or to replace a manager who has departed)
- Change the investment firm because the Committee no longer has confidence in its ability to manage client funds to the greatest advantage.
Who’s Who On The Investment Committee
The Committee does not seek to influence the investment policy of the managers. Its aim is to ensure success by selecting superior managers and holding them accountable for their performance. All our investment managers compete for funds to manage. They understand that we can replace them if we lose confidence in their future ability to meet the investment objectives which we have set them. We cannot guarantee investment performance, however we can help to keep investment managers on their toes.
The Committee’s responsibilities require a broad range of knowledge and skills. Each member has been carefully chosen to ensure these requirements are met.
The Committee chairman is Sir Mark Weinberg, President of St James’s Place plc, and previous holder of many key roles within the financial services industry. In 1961 he founded Abbey Life Assurance, and ten years later Hambro Life Assurance. He has held senior positions within the industry’s regulatory framework, including chairman of the Stock Exchange Committee on Private Share Ownership and deputy chairman of the Securities and Investment Board.
Senior members of the St James’s Place plc Asset Management team sit on the Committee, bringing a wealth of investment experience from extensive careers in the financial services and fund management arenas.
